Increasing Employee Effectiveness
by Cindy Ventrice
Employees who have proven to themselves that they are
capable and worthy of success have the best chance of being effective on the job. You will
recognize them by their positive outlook, their sense of responsibility and their honesty.
They will be your most productive employees.
As the employer, how do you foster effectiveness? You dont
accomplish this with empty praise or the employee of the month award. Every
interaction we have with our employees or that they have with each other, affects
effectiveness. With proper direction, most interactions will be opportunities for
self-improvement.
To improve job performance:
Clarify your purpose. Make sure your employees know the
goals of your organization and how they fit in. Go for the grand vision rather than the
detailed tasks of their workday.
Develop effective communication. Open communication
channels, set guidelines and provide opportunities to practice communication skills in a
non-threatening environment. Employees want to know that their opinion has an impact
on the organization.
Help to set achievable goals. If goals are small and
reachable they will produce success. Use that success to set grander goals. Where less
than 3% of the population sets goals, over half of the most successful people do!
Teach the steps of successful goal achievement. Most goals
that are set, are never achieved. Half of all goal-setters never make a single
attempt to achieve their goal.
Promote a sense of belonging and team work. Belonging to a
strong work team promotes a sense of security that is essential to outstanding
achievement.
Celebrate their accomplishments! Make sure that employees
receive recognition for achieving their goals.
